Makeup artist Melanie Inglessis breaks down the star’s beauty look.
“She's wearing Valentino Couture, and the dress is a lot of dress,” says celebrity makeup artist Melanie Inglessis of Ruth Negga's white Met Gala look. “As far as makeup I decided to interpret the minimal aspect of the Japanese aesthetic, and it’s probably the most natural makeup I’ve done on her — just beautiful, dewy and dare I say, simple.”
There’s makeup designed to make a statement — as on the stunning faces of Rihanna, Lily Collins and Brie Larson Monday night — but that wasn't Inglessis' intention. “I didn't want to make a statement, just [create] a gorgeous look,” she says.
With cornrows in Negga's hair and a cape at her back, the makeup artist pulled back on the actress' cosmetics and let everything else speak. “It's really about Ruth's gorgeous, classic yet very unique face and her skin and her brows and eyes and mouth all one monochrome gorgeousness.”
To that end, she layered two Chanel shadows: the creamy Chanel Ombre Premiere Longwear Cream Eyeshadow in Scintillance topped with Chanel Ombre Premiere Longer Powder Eyeshadow in Talpa, which combine for a long-lasting effect that will outlast the carpet and shimmer slightly well into the afterparty.
Keeping things soft, Inglessis defined Negga’s lips very lightly, blotting on color from a jumbo crayon, and highlighted her cupid’s bow, along with the inner corners of her eyes, cheekbones and brow bones, “to bring the face to life.”
But while it’s what she calls “natural makeup,” it takes the same amount of time as a full-impact face full of obvious cosmetics. And there’s still subtle contouring (using Chanel Soleil Tan de Chanel and Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Luminous Color). Because even when it’s natural, it still needs to show up on camera. “It’s like, 'Oh, it looks great right now,' but if I let her go like this it’s going to disappear in front of the flashes.”
