On the Opening Ceremony Runway, a Beauty Look Fit for a Fighter

A modern Western theme led the glam squad to create a look that made the ladies ready for a battle.

At Opening Ceremony's MADE LA event on Friday night, an epic battle among a crew of female martial arts experts stole the show. The ladies, clad in OC's fall 2017 collection inspired by Georgia O'Keeffe, battled it out with roundhouse kicks and back flips during the “Modern Western” themed presentation.

Since there'd be a lot of body movement, hairstylist Holli Smith wanted to create a style that would reflect the motions and “wasn't too controlled,” she said backstage, adding she wanted to create something “graphic and simple.”

Smith achieved that idea by creating a deep, defined side part, “slicking one side behind the ear and the other side over the ear” as she, along with her team, straightened each model's hair with a flat iron. She sprinkled Bumble & Bumble Thickening Hair Spray with the Surf Spray to “hold it in a way that it has enough product in it but still looks dry” and applied the new Bumble & Bumble Sumo Gel around the hairline to make sure no baby hairs got in the way. A touch of the Strong Hold Hairspray held the 'do in place.

Makeup artist Yadim complemented Smith's work with what he described an as a “desert nymph vibe.”

To start, he applied Maybelline Dream Cushion Liquid Foundation on the models' skin and the Dream Brightening Concealer where needed, but even so, he wanted “a little bit of natural redness to come through in the cheeks” because it reminded him of a windburn effect.

Mixing the Vivid Matte Lipstick in Orange Obsession and the Inti-Matte Nudes Lipstick in Honey Pick, he created a bright base from the cheekbone to the temple to further emphasize the idea of “being in the sun a touch too long,” said Yadim. After he applied both the blush and bronzer from the FaceStudio Master Contour Palette on the cheekbone, he also highlighted that area with an orange/pink shimmer from the City Mini Downtown Sunrise Eyeshadow Palette.

Yadim then took the taupe tone from the Maybelline City Mini Concrete Runway Eyeshadow Palette and combined it with the mauve shades in the City Mini Chill Brunch Eyeshadow Palette to cover the top of the eyelid, from the lash line to almost the brow. He lined the inner waterline with EyeStudio Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Pencil in Black Onyx and curled the lashes, but opted out of using any mascara.

As a finishing touch, Yadim used a wet brush to apply a gold color from the 24K Nudes Eyeshadow Palette to the lid and inner corner of the eye. (“It's meant to be kind of rough,” he said of the metallic finish.) Baby Lips Lip Balm was applied on the lid to “shine it up” and the lips.

The overall beauty look was completed with press-on nails featuring designs inspired by O'Keeffe's paintings, according to nail artist Naomi Yasuda. Using OPI polishes, including the Matte Top Coat, Yasuda created two color-fading concepts to represent a sunrise (“Excuse Me, Big Sur!” pink and “To the Mouse House We Go!” red with “Shh It's Top Secret” deep brown) and sunset (“Suzi the First Lady of Nails” forest green and “I Am What I Amethyst” pale lilac with “Russian Navy” indigo), as well as a pink scorpion design.
