The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician is a hotel within a hotel.
Palm Springs and Las Vegas may be two of the desert’s most popular spots for a weekend getaway. But if you are looking for something off-the-beaten path this spring, Scottsdale fits the bill. Known for spas and golf courses, the charming eastern Arizona city is now playing host to celebrities and professional athletes and their devotees, who converge upon the city for special events or just to hide out.
The newest and most exclusive accommodations in town belong to The Canyon Suites at The Phoenician (a Luxury Collection Resort) — a hotel-within-a-hotel nestled inside The Phoenician Resort, a mainstay in Scottsdale for almost 29 years where the Obamas have vacationed. (The Jokake Inn on the property was featured in the 1987 film Raising Arizona starring Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter.)
Closed from June to August 2016 for a complete remodel, The Canyon Suites recently debuted a totally new vibe that still maintains its reputation as the stomping ground of celebrities, politicians and those seeking dry luxe. With 40 of the 63 rooms being suites, the residential aesthetic starts the moment the doors open — everything is personalized and detail-oriented — right down to the lobby, which is known as the living room. A stay at The Canyon Suites also gives visitors access to The Phoenician’s offerings.
Rooms 8240 and 8340 are known as the Presidential Suites, and they are truly that. Measuring more than 1,800 square feet, the decor by Wimberly Interiors is a chic mix of bold desert contemporary motifs and warm accents such as a glowing fireplace, 10-person dining table and full kitchen for a private chef (with service entrance). Four terraces outside face a waterfall, golf course or picturesque Sonoran Mountain views.
The embodiment of a deep breath, the view from the large patio with modular furniture and daybeds and a firepit provides the ideal backdrop for entertaining a few guests or a lively group. The green-for-days of the golf course will make you forget that you are in the middle of the desert.
Each Presidential Suite has a master bedroom and bathroom with a marble Jacuzzi tub, double showers and vanities and a makeup room. There is an optional second bedroom and another bathroom with a grand total of three showers. You'll find quartz stone countertops throughout, equipped with the latest technology, including dual bedside USB ports and lights affixed in the headboard for reading. Unpack those trunks in the residential size closets.
There’s no need to leave this palatial compound with the menu from J&G Steakhouse from the vision of chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten available to be ordered directly to the room. The spa also comes directly to you with in-room therapeutic and Swedish massage available.
New since the renovation and reserved exclusively for the handful of those lucky enough to be in residence, The Canyon Suites offers an ultra-private and luxe living room space for breakfast service (think baked French toast and specialty oatmeal in the small cast-iron pots) in the morning and craft cocktails in the evening.
To cool off, take a dip in the circular infinity pool and then slip back into a cabana, measuring around 200 square feet with both bathroom and shower facilities — also a great place to chill while working hard. Guests of the Presidential Suite receive complimentary use of a private cabana at the pool.
The options outdoors are sky high with trapeze lessons available from I.FLY Trapeze as well as a golf cart safari tour with a property botanist who instructs on the cactus plants and wildlife up to the base of Camelback Mountain.
And guests aren’t just bound to the resort, thanks to a complimentary chauffeur at beck and call.
The Canyon Suites gives new meaning to heading out to the desert for a few days to relax. And while we have all come to know and love P.S. and Vegas, Scottsdale is a wonderful way to explore fresh territory without venturing too far from the boundaries of civilization.
