Who’s ready for fashion’s biggest night?

The most buzzed-about event in fashion — the Met Gala — is (finally) coming up on Monday.

Ahead of the star-studded soiree taking place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and hosted by Vogue editor Anna Wintour, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Caroline Kennedy, Gisele Bundchen and Tom Brady, here's a primer to get you up to speed.

The honoree:

The evening will celebrate Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, who is the subject of the latest Costume Institute exhibition, “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between.” The museum show features 150 of her womenswear designs created for her brand Comme des Garcons (which translates from French to “like some boys”), a favorite with edgy stars such as Pharrell, Lady Gaga and Kanye. The avant-garde pieces will showcase how the designer has blurred the lines between fashion and art, from her first Paris Fashion Week show in 1981 to her most recent collection. The “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons” exhibition, running from May 4 to Sept. 4, marks only the second time the museum has honored a living designer (the first was Yves Saint Laurent exhibition in 1983).

The guest list:

Along with a who's who of fashion designers, Brie Larson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Frances Bean Cobain, Courtney Love, Bella and Gigi Hadid, Chrissy Teigen, Dakota Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Lorde, Hailey Baldwin, Paris Jackson, Ruth Negga, Sarah Paulson, Zendaya, Zoe Kravitz and more are expected to attend the event, which is being sponsored by Conde Nast, Apple, Farfetch.com, H&M and Maison Valentino.

The dress code:

Attendees are encouraged to dress in the spirit of the “avant-garde,” according to a Met spokeswoman. It's going to be sight to see how stars interpret the theme when they ascend the Met's steps. While some stars (like co-chairs Perry and Pharrell) will wear Comme des Garcons, others will be dressed by the designers who are taking them. So far, we know Zendaya will wear Dolce & Gabbana and Celine Dion will be in Versace — both will be styled by Law Roach. Mandy Moore will wear Michael Kors' “nod to Kawakubo,” says stylist Erica Cloud.

“I think that Comme has such a broad influence on fashion that the dresses will be less out there than other times,” adds stylist Kate Young, who works with Michelle Williams and Selena Gomez, of what we might see on the carpet.

How to watch:

You can watch what goes down on the carpet via Facebook Live. Vogue, which sponsors the extravaganza, has tapped the live streaming service, in partnership with Moët & Chandon, for a live 360-degree view of the event. Starting at 7 p.m. ET, fans can visit Vogue's Facebook page to watch the broadcast. E! will also provide TV coverage with its Live From the Red Carpet show, E! News and Fashion Police.

The history:

It's more than just a fashion parade — it's an annual fundraising event. The money raised from ticket sales each year benefits the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, which stages the museum's fashion and textile exhibitions. As you can imagine, gala tickets cost a pretty penny, at $30,000 each and $275,000 for a table. 2016's gala raised approximately $13.5 million, according to Forbes. The fancy occasion has been held since 1946.

The Hollywood connection:

The Met Gala gets the Hollywood treatment more than once. Outsiders got an inside look at what goes into organizing the Met Gala in the 2016 documentary The First Monday in May, which went behind the scenes of the 2015 “China: Through the Looking Glass”-themed party. It will be in the spotlight again in Ocean's Ocho, the upcoming Gary Ross-directed thriller that follows criminal mastermind Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) as she tries to pull off the heist of the century at the Met Gala. Bullock is joined by Cate Blanchett, Sarah Paulson, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and Awkwafina in the star-studded film.
